Community

At the heart of our success as a company is the recognition that we are inextricably tied to the success and well-being of our communities and our broader society. With that in mind, we engage with diverse stakeholders and invest in critical efforts to support and enhance our business, our communities and our employees.

Environmental Liaison Committee

A significant part of Northern Pulp’s community engagement to date has been through the formation and engagement with an independent Environmental Liaison Committee. Formed in October 2020, the voluntary Environmental Liaison Committee consists of 16 concerned citizens, including academics, fishers, former Northern Pulp employees, a Mill retiree, business owners and operators, and forestry workers, among others.

Early in its mandate, the Environmental Liaison Committee generated a report with a list of issues, questions, and grievances related to the Mill’s actual or perceived impact on air quality, water quality and usage, the thermal impact of the effluent on Pictou Harbour and/or the Northumberland Strait, as well as on solid waste disposal. View the Environmental Liaison Committee's Interim Report. Northern Pulp used this report to inform the Tomorrow's Mill transformation plan.

The Environmental Liaison Committee continues to be engaging in dialogue with and receiving input from the public to ensure Northern Pulp is listening to what is being said by stakeholders and rights holders.

Community Investment

Northern Pulp proudly partners with our community neighbours. We support a variety of charities, community events and local projects, including the United Way and the Canadian Red Cross.

Tracking Any Possible Community Impacts

The proposed environmental program will include monitoring all impacts on the local receiving environment and being transparent with the results. From an air emissions perspective, we will operate ambient air monitoring systems to track air quality. This data is shared directly with government and will be available on our online community dashboard. From a waste water perspective, we participate in the federal Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) program to assess impacts on the local aquatic receiving environment. Again, the results of these studies will be shared with the public.
